Choosing an Affiliate Program to Promote

Choosing an affiliate program to promote sounds easy but can be confusing. When you decide to become an affiliate marketer, you may feel like you’re standing in the center of a maze, unsure what direction to take. Affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to make money online, especially if you are a beginner and don’t want to invest anything up front. But how do you choose what to promote? This article lists some things to consider when choosing an affiliate program.

1) Who is your target market? Do you have an idea who your website visitors are? Do you know their approximate age, gender, marital status, economic status? These are just a few factors that affect what products might be appealing.

2) Is this a product YOU would buy? Choose a product that you feel good endorsing. Promoting a product solely because of high commissions can’t be done with the same passion as a product you genuinely believe in. Although it isn’t necessary to buy a product to promote it, a more genuine endorsement shows through when you really believe the product you are promoting is a good value.

3) What is the commission? It has to be worth your while to promote a product. Is it worth your while to promote a product that will make you $1 or $2? Good commission is 50% or more; but for a higher priced product, 15% or 20% may be enough. Also, make sure you understand the terms such as how often you are paid (e.g. quarterly or monthly), and what is the threshold you have to reach before being paid.

4) Is it a two-tier program? An added source of income is available in affiliate programs with a two-tier program. What this means is you are rewarded for bringing in other affiliates and receive additional commission based on their sales.

5) Does it offer lifetime commissions? An affiliate program offering lifetime commissions pays you every time the customer buys something from the merchant, not just the first time.

6) What about recurring commissions? When choosing an affiliate program to promote, choose at least one offering recurring commissions, such as web hosting, membership sites or autoresponder services.

7) What kind of marketing support is there? A good affiliate program offers multiple tools for success, such as sales letters, solo ads or banners. Although you may choose to write your own ads, the merchant should be interested in helping you succeed.

8) How professional is the merchant you are representing? Some things to look for are testimonials, a money-back guarantee and a professionally designed website. They should offer strong customer support and a good monitoring system.

With these tips in mind, choosing an affiliate program to promote isn’t as confusing. The right choice will dramatically improve your chances for success.
