Dream Big Dreams

Those who are very successful have one thing in common. They dream big dreams. The beginning of all great accomplishments is dreaming. As Carl Sandburg said, “Nothing happens unless first we dream.” I guess everyone, at some point of his or her life, has dreamed of being somebody important. You may fantasize about quitting your job, firing your boss and staying home with your children. You may be dreaming about freedom from financial struggles.

Often, we have great hopes and aspirations. Unfortunately, for many people, their dreams remain just that – dreams.

The most common problem people have when it comes to making their dreams a reality is the word impossible. Most people get hung up thinking I can't do this. It's too hard. It's impossible. Their minds become consumed with lists of obstacles or reasons why their dreams can’t become a reality.

Did you ever stop and think that if everyone spent their time dwelling on obstacles, there would be no inventions, or accomplishments? Some people may be quick to tell you that what you are dreaming can’t be a reality. The trick is to stay focused on what you want, and tune out those who are chanting “that can’t be done”, “you are wasting your time”.

It’s important to have aspirations, but you need to make a plan of how to go about making them a reality. You must aim high, and start working towards your goal little by little. Turn it into bite sized pieces, or baby steps. Do what you can with today. How does a famous writer finish a best-seller? One word at a time.

Thomas Edison once said that genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. It is definitely true that attaining your goals requires a whole lot of hard work and discipline and especially persistence. But don’t for get about the 1% - the little moment of inspiration. Don’t forget to dream big dreams.

The importance of that 1% inspiration, that moment that inspires you to strive outside your comfort zone can’t be overemphasized. You must dream in order to strive to become what you can only imagine today. As Marcel Proust said, “If a little dreaming is dangerous, the cure for it is not to dream less but to dream more, to dream all the time.” Keep dreaming. Don’t talk yourself out of what you know you are capable of. Think big, dream big dreams and work hard to attain those dreams.

Remember the famous quote by Mark Twain: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do.”

Dream big dreams. Then make a plan to make your dreams a reality, one baby step at a time.
