Starting an eBay Business
Starting an
eBay
business is one of the easiest ways to get started making money online. You don’t need to know html, graphic design or computer programming, and you don’t need a lot of money to get started.
Many people get started on eBay cleaning out closets and garages. Some make a little money; some barely break even. It’s good to start by listing ten or fifteen items around the house so you can get used to the auction process. If you start to gain momentum from selling unwanted items, you may want to consider starting an eBay business instead of approaching eBay as just a hobby.
Before you jump in, there are things you need to think through. You need to invest forethought and planning, just like any other business. What will you sell? How will you distinguish yourself from the competition? Are you sure there is sufficient profit margin between the price you will pay and the price you’re likely to receive if you sell each item?
The most important quality you need to bring to your eBay business is passion.
Begin by thinking about what you love the most….what gets you excited to the point other people wish you’d stop talking about it? For instance, if you are crazy about horses, if you know them inside and out, you probably can recite all kinds of little known facts about horse care to the difference between breeds and temperaments, etc. If you are a guitar player, then you know all about models and string and tuners; you may hear music in your sleep.
Enjoying what you’re doing makes your business fun, not work. Genuine love and thorough knowledge for the product you are offering for sale will be apparent to your auction visitors.
A picture is worth a thousand words when starting an eBay business. Without a decent picture, your auction may not even get visitors. Invest in a decent digital camera, and take the time to learn how to use it.
Remember that your feedback rating is the lifeblood of your eBay business, and your reputation is on the line with each transaction. You must stay on top of any communication you might receive from customers or potential customers. Disputes must be resolved promptly and fairly. You will need to develop a system of separating business funds from personal funds, and of tracking your profits and expenses. Organized record keeping is a must.
Time needs to be spent not only listing and shipping items, but in researching what other sellers are doing. What items are selling well and at what prices?
These are just a few of the challenges you will face when you consider starting your own eBay business. Take your time, face the challenges, and you’ll be successful starting an eBay business.
