How Badly Do You Want to Work from Home?

How badly do you want to work from home? Many people will read this question and say “I want it more than anything.” But do you really? Do you want it enough to keep at it until you make it happen – no matter what?

The graveyard is full of people whose lives came and went without their dreams being realized. Often if our dreams are not realized, it’s because we give up at the first sign of trouble – or even the tenth or twentieth sign of trouble. We run into a brick wall and we let go of our dreams. We shrug our shoulders and say “Maybe it’s not meant to be.”

I was fortunate recently to accidentally catch an episode of Oprah in which her guest was a man by the name of Randy Pausch. Randy is a college professor who is dying of pancreatic cancer. His talk was referred to as his “last lecture” and I found it to be extremely motivational. (If you are interested in seeing the video or downloading the transcript, visit http://www.cmu.edu/randyslecture/ ). To me the most profound thing he said involved brick walls. He said “Brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls aren’t there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to show us how badly we want things.”

So how badly do you want to work from home?

Whatever obstacles you have run into, they can be overcome. Whether you’re looking for a telecommuter position, or attempting to make money with your own internet business, just because you haven’t attained success yet doesn’t mean you won’t. If what you’ve tried up until now has failed, try again. Try something else. It’s not one blow with a chisel that makes a rock a sculpture. Without hundreds, maybe thousands of blows, a rock is still just a rock.

My favorite motivational speaker is Les Brown. He suggests that in order to meet our goals, we need to find five things that will empower us when we get discouraged. What five things will make you get up and try again when life knocks you down – or “hits you on the blind side” as Les would say? Write these five things down and post them where you can keep reminding yourself how badly you want to work from home and why.

Consider the following quote by Michelangelo Buonarroti, the Italian Renaissance painter and sculptor. “The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.” Are you aiming too high or too low?

Your dream to work from home is something that has been accomplished by many other moms and dads. If they can do it, you can do it. The brick walls are only there to prove how badly you really want it.
